Fresh rock with history
Four decades is a long time, a damn long time! And yet, after so many years, Klaus Auer managed to get the members of his old band “Nightingale” together for a revival. Together, they rocked the Krefeld live music venue “Kulturrampe” in June 2022 and recreated the old feeling. Klaus Auer, Rainer Kretschmann, Rainer “James” Koopmann and Thomas Stachelhaus quickly agreed that this evening should not remain a “one-night stand”. They founded Nightingale in 1978 and made music together until the early 80s. Then they went into professional life, started families and built houses. Now it was time to start again.
Nightingale was not the musical debut of the four musicians from Krefeld. They had already been involved in the very lively local rock scene: Thomas Stachelhaus and Rainer Kretschmann came from “Stormy Pain”, one of Krefeld's hottest bands. Klaus Auer and James Koopmann had previously played with “Cast Iron” and won the title of “Best Pop Group on the Rhine” with their formation at a band contest in Düsseldorf's Philipshalle in 1977.
After the successful gig in the summer of 2022, a vibe went through the band. They began reworking old songs and writing new ones in professionally equipped studios. Now Nightingale '78 is represented on 150 streaming platforms worldwide, has a YouTube channel and an Instagram account. The foursome's next project is to bring their music to vinyl.
As back then, Nightingale`78 plays classic, straightforward rock - sometimes melodic as in 'Sweet Emotions', sometimes harder and more dynamic as in 'Jealousy'. Klaus Auer's voice still has a great elasticity with high, clear tones in the ballads and an earthy, edgy groove in the faster pieces. Thomas Stachelhaus sings even harder, with his powerful rock voice, driving songs like “Losing my mind” and “All your talk” forward with his hammering drums. The virtuosity of the four is also evident in Rainer Kretschmann's classic rock guitar riffs and licks and James Koopmann's rich, fundamental bass. Nightingale`78 is as fresh as it was 40 years ago - and perhaps even a little more developed today.
“We've always had our own style. Nightingale '78 sounds like Nightingale '78,” emphasizes Rainer Kretschmann. “Now we're very curious to see what happens next. I think there will soon be more new Nightingale '78 songs that will push the band further forward.

Frischer Rock mit Geschichte
Vier Jahrzehnte sind eine lange Zeit, eine verdammt lange Zeit! Und doch schaffte es Klaus Auer nach so vielen Jahren, die Mitglieder seiner alten Band „Nightingale“ für ein Revival zusammenzutrommeln. Gemeinsam rockten sie im Juni 2022 die Krefelder Live-Musik-Location „Kulturrampe“ und stellten das alte Feeling wieder her. Schnell waren sich Klaus Auer, Rainer Kretschmann, Rainer „James“ Koopmann und Thomas Stachelhaus einig, dass dieser Abend kein „One-Night-Stand“ bleiben sollte. Nightingale hatten sie 1978 gegründet und bis Anfang der 80er Jahre zusammen Musik gemacht. Dann gingen sie ins Berufsleben, gründeten Familien, bauten Häuser. Jetzt sollte es wieder losgehen.
Nightingale war nicht der musikalische Erstling der vier Krefelder. Sie waren bereits vorher in der sehr lebendigen lokalen Rock-Szene unterwegs: Thomas Stachelhaus und Rainer Kretschmann kamen von „Stormy Pain“, einer der angesagtesten Krefelder Bands. Klaus Auer und James Koopmann spielten vorher bei „Cast Iron“ und gewannen mit ihrer Formation 1977 bei einem Bandcontest in der Düsseldorfer Philipshalle den Titel „Beste Popgruppe am Rhein“.
Nach dem gelungenen Gig im Sommer 2022 ging ein Vibe durch die Band. In professionell ausgestatteten Studios begannen sie alte Songs aufzuarbeiten und Neue zu schreiben. Jetzt ist Nightingale `78 weltweit auf 150 Streaming-Plattformen vertreten, hat einen Youtube-Kanal und einen Instagram Account. Das nächste Projekt der Vier ist es, ihre Musik auf Vinyl zu bringen.
Wie damals spielt Nightingale`78 klassischen, geradlinigen Rock - zum Teil melodisch wie in ‚Sweet Emotions‘, zum Teil härter und dynamischer wie in ‚Jealousy‘. Klaus Auers Stimme hat nach wie vor eine große Elastizität mit hohen klaren Tönen in den Balladen und erdig-kantigem Groove in den schnelleren Stücken. Noch etwas härter, mit seiner kräftigen Rockröhre , singt Thomas Stachelhaus, der Songs wie „Losing my mind“ und „All your talk“ zugleich mit seinen hämmernden Drums nach vorne treibt. Die Virtuosität der Vier zeigt sich ebenso in Rainer Kretschmanns Classical Rock Gitarren Riffs und Licks und James Koopmanns sattem, fundamentalen Bass. Nightingale`78 ist so frisch wie vor 40 Jahren – und heute vielleicht sogar noch etwas weiterentwickelt.
„Wir hatten schon immer unseren eigenen Stil. Nightingale `78 klingt wie Nightingale´78“, betont Rainer Kretschmann. „Jetzt sind wir sehr neugierig, wie es weitergeht. Ich denke, bald gibt es mehr neue Nightingale`78 Songs, die die Band weiter nach vorne pushen werden.
